Even the smallest business can go global with the help of clever marketing, as managed by Barefoot SEO. It is a way of opening your business doors to an increasingly globalized world. If you’re offering a useful product that’s tapping a market niche in need of what you’re offering, the web offers that chance to make it all happen. But at the same time, the internet dream happens to a tiny percentage. Most people learn the hard way by coming up against the hard edge of Google, and realising that without visibility it doesn’t matter if you’ve got the best product in the world. You need to be seen.
Keep it Simple
One of our most common client experiences is that of the new webmaster wanting to conquer the world before they’ve even conquered their local town. Excitement is fantastic of course and don’t let us hamper you in that regard, but you must also remember to keep your expectations realistic. Rome wasn’t built in a day. So first start with the less competitive keywords relevant to your local market, which in London may be a borough, and use the power of Google Places to target locals. Once that’s done you’ll have the reassurance of the beginnings of traffic and revenue and it’s then more realistic to start expanding the search. On this tack, the other point is that the most specifically you can cater to your particular audience’s needs, the better you’ll convert. Recently an accountants just starting out in the business and offering a superb range of niche servers made the suggestion we target London accountants for them. Absolutely not, we said. It would cost a lot of money and time to rank for that keyword and it would convert terribly! Much better to keep focussed, and work on offering something no one else is! Work to your own strengths.
Be Patient
Moving one site in Google, necessitates moving a lot of others out of the way. Another way of saying this is that, as in life, everything on the web is connected. So to effect the algorithm takes a lot of work and most of all some patience. Google is jugging trillions of search results and using unbelievably sophisticated and every changing technology to try and deliver a good user experience to its browsers. As SEO professionals one of our jobs is to understand that process and, working within its boundaries, use what we know to make your site rank highly. Generally it takes three months to make that happen, or for you to see any substantial search ranking improvements. Of course it can happen sooner and, in competitive niches, it may take longer. But these rough guidelines are something you should know before we begin to avoid frustration. Don’t worry though – it will happen eventually!
